Though I adore all deaf dogs, there is an extra-special place in my heart for deaf bully-breed dogs. My muse and deaf dog, Edison, is a pit bull-Dogo Argentino mix and my deaf dog Foster is a Dogo Argentino-and-something-or-other mix. I also have two hearing bully-breed dogs: Darwin, a pit bull mix and Galileo, a purebred American Staffordshire Terrier. Each one was adopted because, here at Dog & His Boy, we make adoption our only option and we encourage you to do the same.
It would seem to my neighbors, friends and coworkers that I am as passionate about pitties as I am about deaf dogs, and you know what? I am! I could give you a long list of reasons why I connect with bully-breed dogs on such a deep, emotional level, but it all comes down to one thing: They are the underdogs of the world with the odds stacked against them yet they are survivors- and I relate to this on a very personal level. Social justice is hardwired into my DNA and, for me, this extends to all creatures, not just those of us with two legs and opposable thumbs.
Pit bulls are subjected to false and unfair stereotypes, frequently told they are not welcome based purely on the way they look and, in many cities, counties and countries, they are flat-out banned- or worse- because of their breed with no consideration or assessment of an individual dog’s behavior.
Did You Know That…

The Mountain© t-shirt company is as passionate about helping animals in need as you and I. Putting their money where their values and ethics are, they have partnered with animal-lover and artist Dean Russo to create a complete line of t-shirts celebrating rescue animals. The Russo Rescue Collection is beautiful, wearable artwork that was created to bring attention to animal rescue as well as provide financial support for the largest animal sanctuary in the country, Best Friends Animal Society. In fact, with every t-shirt from the Russo Rescue Collection that is purchased, The Mountain will make a donation to Best Friends.
The first shirt I picked was the “Thoughtful Pitbull” shirt which I’m showing off here, though I recently purchased a second one- “This Year’s Love”- using coupon code MTNPETS which saved me 25% AND helped support Best Friends Animals Society with much needed funding. To learn more about Best Friends Animal Society and all it’s progressive work and initiatives, you should look here.
To see all the cool, colorful t-shirts in the Russo Rescue Collection, look here, and don’t forget to use the coupon code MTNPETS. If you’re a cat lover, they have cat-themed t-shirts, too!
The Mountain is so excited about this new collection of environmentally friendly t-shirts made here in the U.S.A. that they are running a HUGE giveaway. Seriously, I had to clean my ears and rub my eyes to make sure I was hearing and reading it correctly!

I wear my Russo Rescue Collection t-shirt proudly and it looks great with anything I wear; my husband said something about it being “fashion-flexible” and “fashion-forward”, but I’m a frat boy so I just politely nodded my head and picked my nose. All I know and care about is that it is comfortable and it speaks to two of my core values: advocating for pit bulls and supporting animal welfare. The 25% off coupon code, MTNPETS, is just a great bonus!

I’m a fan of APDTs, too! Thanks for sharing some GOOD info on the breed (and associated “cousins” as well!)
These are great!
ღ husky hugz ღ frum our pack at Love is being owned by a husky!
I love these t-shirts, I hope I win, because I need all of them! (I will share some though.) Best Friends Animal Society is one of my favorite rescues, so I’m super happy that they will benefit directly from the purchase of these beautiful tees!
Love the cocker shirt And this review is fantastic.
Those are really cool shirts! It is great how they capture “pitbulls” in a different light. The colors and movement in the art depict an animal that is much more fun and alive than what is seen in the stereotype. I will have to check out that giveaway!
I like the dog is love shirt. It’s great they’re benefiting rescue too.
Love the tees, Bernard, and your review. Love the way you write, brother! Important message, cool product, what more? If they have one small enough, I’ll buy. Otherwise, I’ll buy for a friend. Thanks!
Great post! Absolutely agree about discrimination against pitbulls being a social justice issue. So frustrating when I hear normally open-minded, educated friends start in on pitties. Although Ruby is clearly not a pit, I consider myself a friend to ALL dogs especially pits. Because we have a rabbit who likes to hop around the house and boss everyone else around, we are limited to dogs and cats without any predator instinct – tough to find. But certainly in the future, we will welcome a pit or pit-mix into our family.
P.S: Just re-read my comment and to clarify – of course, I’m not saying all pits have a prey instinct only that we have to be extra careful because of Lulu, our bunny. Fortunately, Ruby is completely submissive to her.
I really loved the colorful cat shirt I saw in the collection, and I love that The Mountain is donating to Best Friends – they do such amazing work there!
Great review and info on “Pitbulls”. Love the colourful t-shirts and the fact that made in USA and donating to rescues. What a cool company (popped by and followed). Amazingly generous giveaway too.
We really like these shirts. Of course, Mom Paula would get the bright and colorful kitty shirt.
This initiative is awesome! What beautiful shirts! We have some of Dean’s artwork and we get compliments on it all the time!
whoa- those zombie hoodies are intense! I really like the border collie Dean Russo design.
