Feeding Healthy Dog Food When Traveling
Did you hear the news?! Edison and I recently finished our very first street art tour! This tour has been on our “must do” list for a few years and, when it finally came together, I might’ve twerked out my excitement! (In private of course because, well, no one wants to see that!) While planning the tour, I had lots of things to coordinate and schedule- the itinerary, the driving routes, the walls we wanted to photograph- but one of the most important things I struggled with was how to keep feeding healthy dog food when traveling.
So I called Dr. Harvey’s.
And then I planned this blog post- because If I was struggling, then chances are other people are struggling with this too.
Why I Had To Change Edison’s Diet For The Trip
At home, Edison and my other three dogs eat Dr. Harvey’s Paradigm, which we all love, but on the road, this wasn’t an option for me.
You see, when feeding Paradigm, you need to add fresh cooked or raw protein and high-quality healthy oil. At home, this is easy but on the road, I knew I wouldn’t be able to cook or add raw protein- and chances are, you won’t either when traveling with your dog.
After explaining that I needed a healthy food that was ALSO easy to prepare on the road, Dr. Harvey’s recommended Oracle.
Why I Chose Oracle When Traveling With My Dog
Oracle is a fresh-prepared, grain-free, dog food with freeze-dried raw protein- chicken or beef, my choice!- and all I had to do was add water, mix and wait for it rehydrate.
But more than convenient and easy to prepare when traveling with your dog, Oracle is healthy- and the ingredients say it all!
Not only is the #1 ingredient freeze-dried raw meat, Oracle also includes fresh fruits and vegetables including pumpkin, broccoli, spinach, cabbage, coconut, blueberries and bananas among others. You can see all of the ingredients that make Oracle stand out right here.
Oracle also exceeds AAFCO Standards and is ideal for dogs of all ages, from puppies to seniors.
So, after talking to Dr. Harvey’s and doing some more research, I chose Oracle as the way I would power Edison through 700 miles in 3 different hotels in 4 different cities in 4 days.
BONUS! The amount of dehydrated Oracle and water you need is based on your dog’s weight and the instructions are right on the bag! This is perfect for people like me who hasn’t been able to find his keys in two days and has to text himself important notes, like “Your husband’s name is Omar”…
BTW, if you ever have questions about the best diet, supplement or grooming product for your dog, you too can call Dr. Harvey’s- and even talk to Dr. Harvey himself! They love to hear from pet people and here’s the number: 866 DOC-H 123 (or 866.362.4123 if you old school!)
Tips For Feeding Oracle When Traveling With Your Dog
Here’s a few tips I learned from my recent experience feeding Oracle on our street art tour:
Make a list of everything you’ll need to bring on your trip to feed Oracle.
- You’d hate to get 200 miles from home and realize you don’t have a measuring cup or food bowl! Prepare ahead of time to make your trip go as smoothly as possible!
Here’s what you need to bring:
- A bag of Oracle dog food. I recommend bringing a new bag to avoid running out of food mid-trip.
- A measuring cup
- Fresh water. I brought a few gallons of bottled water with me, which I used for both drinking water and to make Edison’s Oracle meal. I re-filled them with safe drinking water along the way so we always had fresh water available.
- A fork or spoon to mix the food- you can mix it right in his food bowl!
- A food bowl AND a water bowl
- A sponge and paper towel to wash and dry your dog’s food bowl
Begin to transition your dog to Oracle a week or so before your trip. Why?
- First, you can make sure your dog likes it and will eat it. You DO NOT want to find out mid-trip that your dog doesn’t like the food!
- Second, a slow transition to Oracle or any new food is less likely to cause GI upset.
Our recent street art tour was such an exciting and rewarding experience- and is definitely one of the highlights of my year. So much so that I’m beginning to plan our next tour!
One reason our first street art tour was so successful is because of Oracle.
Oracle took a huge burden off my shoulders and allowed me to focus on all the other things I needed to do each day: driving, shooting photos, driving some more, checking into new hotels, getting settled in a new hotel room, editing photos and then creating and sharing those photos across multiple social media channels several times each day. Oh yes, and then sleep…
Oracle exceeded Edison’s nutritional and taste bud needs as well as my healthy yet convenient requirements- with nothing more than some food, some water, a measuring cup and a fork!
Coming Up Next…
I also brought along some herbal supplements to help support Edison’s health and well-being during a very busy, very hot, non-stop road trip: Runs Be Done digestive tract supplement, Emune-Boost herbal supplement and Relax herbal supplement.
Watch this space for more information about each of these supplements and why I used them along with more photos and memories of our trip!
