If your dog snacks from the trash, listen up!
As a veterinary technician, friends and neighbors frequently come to me with medical questions about their dog. They might want me to translate into plain English what their veterinarian just told them. They might want to know how make their dog stop itching. They might have questions about skin care or cleaning ears. They even bring me the occasional bag of feces (or diarrhea) and ask me to look at it!
I will tell you what I tell them. I am a technician, not a veterinarian, and there are three things I cannot legally do:
- Prescribe medicine
- Perform surgery
Once I’ve made that clear, I do try to help or give advice to the best of my ability. Helping animals isn’t just what I do, it’s who I am.
Because of these experiences, I was thrilled to learn about the Bayer® ExpertCare™ line of animal wellness products. For my entire life, I have known about and used Bayer products. They are one of those companies whose name is synonymous with health, trustworthiness and safety. To hear that the same company my family and I have turned to for our own healthcare needs is now bringing their name, reputation and exacting standards to our pets was exciting.
To offer these products to pet parents everywhere, Bayer partnered with PetSmart®, another company I trust and value. Knowing that I can refer people to wellness products for their dog from two companies they know is a relief. I want to help, whenever I can, and knowing that there is likely a Bayer ExpertCare solution at the local PetSmart is comforting, to me AND the pet parent knocking on my door.

Did you know that there is a skin care and first aid section at PetSmart? If not, don’t be alarmed. Many people pop into PetSmart, grab the food and toys their pooch needs then run out! At my PetSmart, this section is near the in-store veterinary clinic.
I spent a long time looking at each item, its ingredients and thinking about each of my dog’s unique needs. I know my boys better than anyone, including my road-warrior husband, so I used my head then trusted my gut.
I knew that Galileo and Foster, in particular, would benefit from the Probiotic Chews. I knew that the Itch Relief Spray and Spot-on Moisturizer might be good for Darwin, with his blue fawn coat and sensitive skin. I knew that the deaf dogs, the white dogs, the always dirty dogs, could definitely benefit from the Coat Cleansing Foam and the Skin Cleansing Wipes. All four of them could use a good ear cleaning, so I also selected the Ear Cleansing Rinse.
Many of the questions I am asked relate to gastrointestinal (GI) upset. You know…diarrhea, vomiting or a chronically soft stool.
The modern world can wreak havoc on our dog’s digestive system. Antibiotics, stress and dumpster diving all yield messy consequences; an imbalanced digestive system can get real ugly, real fast.
The gastrointestinal system is incredibly important to your dog’s overall health. Sure, it is the tube in which food is ingested, broken down, digested, nutrients absorbed and waste eliminated, but it is also extremely important to the immune system. In fact, the digestive tract is one of the most important immune barriers.
The GI system is home to millions of naturally occurring, health-producing bacteria. Because of it’s function, the digestive tract also contains tons of bad bacteria. When things are out of whack, good bacteria dwindles, bad bacteria proliferates and the ugliness begins.
Antibiotics are a great example. Your veterinarian prescribes these when your dog is fighting a bacterial infection, say kennel cough, or in the case of a virus, to prevent a secondary bacterial infection. Unfortunately, the antibiotic kills both good and bad bacteria. Especially strong medications or extended treatment can easily disrupt and quickly disrupt the natural balance of things down there.
How Can You Prevent or Counteract GI Upset?
Adding probiotics is a simple yet important way that we can support our dog’s GI system. Probiotic supplements, like the Bayer ExpertCare Probiotic Chews, provides healthy bacteria to help keep or achieve that delicate balance in your dog’s gut. What I like about these probiotic chews is that they are flavored chews that I can give like a treat or toss in their food. This is a real benefit for non-technician pet parents who can sometimes struggle to get a pill down!
Unlike probiotics sold for humans to use, Bayer ExpertCare Probiotic Chews are formulated with the right balance of organisms that your dog needs. Yes, mammals are mammals, but the needs of our dog are different than ours. It’s important to make sure that any probiotic supplement we offer our dog contains the right balance for his body.
Both Galileo and Foster and bully-breed dogs, which means that eat anything: food, containers and wrappers from the garbage, cardboard, socks, rocks, dirt, you name it. They look with their eyes, their hands and their mouth!Heck, last week Foster tore a industrial-strength rubber food-dispensing toy apart and swallowed a dozen pieces. I know because I counted them as I cleaned the vomit off my bare foot. #Pibbling!
I immediately rewarded his behavior by giving him a “cookie”- a probiotic chew from Bayer ExpertCare.
If your dog is an indiscriminate eater, needs a round of antibiotics or is plagued by a sensitive stomach, adding these probiotic chews to his diet is an easy way to provide much-needed support. They do not require a prescription, they are formulated for a dog’s unique needs and they are available at your neighborhood PetSmart. Look here to find the closest PetSmart to you.
