This adventure began with Darwin, who found me in a CVS three years ago. He was running, terrified, through the store, without a collar, leash or his person in sight. I bought a leash and fashioned it into a make-shift collar to safely get him home. We spent weeks getting to know each other, walking, sitting at Starbucks, taking naps and watching Golden Girls. I was still in school, studying to be a veterinary technician, and he was the best study partner I could ever have. During our many walks, I promised him that it was me and him against the world. Three years later, I still whisper this in his ear almost everyday. It has become the secret handshake in our secret club of two.
