Today, we’re talking about nutrition. Living Nutrition™, to be exact.
Living nutrition is food that is made of whole-prey protein sources, superfoods that are packed with nutrition and fruits, herbs and probiotics for a healthy digestive system. Sure, I could be talking about healthy yet delicious food for you and me but, no, I’m talking about high-quality food for our four-legged canine family members. If you’re anything like me, your dogs eat better than you do…just the way it should be!
But what do I mean by “superfoods”?
A superfood, as defined by the Oxford Dictionary is a “nutrient-rich food considered to be especially beneficial for health and well-being”, and the Wellness® TruFood® line of dog and cat food is packed with ingredients that definitely meet this standard.
It is because of wholesome and unique ingredients like chickpeas, lentils, beets, blueberries, pumpkin and ginger that we went to our local PetSmart store (well, actually, we’ve made two trips this week and it’s only Wednesday!) and bought some TruFood food and treats to rotate into Edison & Co’s. rotational diet. We chose the Lamb, Chickpea and Turkey Liver recipe and also grabbed two flavors of the grain-free Coco Chia Bakes along with some Beef & Beef Liver Protein Bites as training rewards. Deaf dogs love to learn, but need to be properly motivated!

But here’s the thing: the superfood ingredients in TruFood have been carefully selected to provide specific health benefits. They chose chickpeas, lentils and flaxseed because they are grain-free sources of fiber. They added beets and blueberries and cranberries (OH MY!) because they taste good but also because they support a health immune system. Pumpkin, ginger, turmeric and yogurt cultures were chosen because they help keep a dog’s digestive system in clean working order. As a “dog food foodie”, that is, someone with a special interest in canine nutrition, I always appreciate food that includes novel sources of important nutrients and is also crafted to help maintain good health. TruFood is also slow cooked in small batches, which is a great way to ensure quality control!

As much as I believe in a nutritious rotating diet for my deaf (and hearing) dogs, I also want to offer them treats that are irresistible but are also made with healthy ingredients. Enter Coco Chia Bakes! We picked up both the Chicken, Beets & Coconut Oil and the Salmon, Coconut Oil & Spinach flavors. Since they were sold out of the Lamb, Purple Carrot & Coconut Oil flavor, I see another trip to My PetSmart soon! These are perfect training treats: small, hides easily in my pocket or bait bag and gets the boys to work hard for them. The Protein Bites are big enough for extra-special treats but are soft enough that I can break them into smaller bite-size pieces, too.

We love TruFood and PetSmart which gives us an excuse to visit the store often. It is a wonderful addition to our rotational feeding plan.
